“In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see,
so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.”
Matthew 5:16 NLT
so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.”
Matthew 5:16 NLT
While my sinful way manifested itself with flare ups and use of foul language, when accepting the Lord as my Savior in 1983 I thought I had it all, how wrong I was, and how thankful I am that not only did the Lord rescue me from my sinful way but thanks to the sacrifice that Jesus made for all of us I have obtained redemption, the redemption that only He can bring to us.
Having gone through life as a professional athlete and then involved in politics and some Hollywood life I thought I was above all, I thought I could play God and pride kept me from really finding the peace that only having the Holy Spirit dwell within us could bring.
Obviously through my life I have met many great athletes, some fine actors and politicians yet none of them have impressed me as much as a young man I met in Portland, Oregon in the summer of 2011 during the Junior National Racquetball Championships representing the state of Texas where my son Brian was playing.
The young man I speak of is Chase Robinson who at first impressed me by his on-court ability, but then the manner in which he conducted himself off the court led me to speak to my young son and to advise him that here was a young man that he may want to emulate.
Since then I have been a big fan of Chase and was totally impressed when I heard him talk boldly about the influence of Jesus Christ in his life, and then the manner in which he lives his life pointed to a very devout Christian young man. His exemplary personal conduct, combined with his being perhaps one of the most fundamentally sound racquetball players for his age that I have come across, and these players include the likes of John Ellis, Sudsy Monchik, Rocky Carson, Marc Pollack, Gabe Feldman and my own son Mark to name a few drew tremendous attention from me towards this young man.
Numerous athletes are fine Christians, and the media makes a big deal of it. However Chase’s faith goes unnoticed because he participates in the obscurity of the sport that is racquetball. Those of us fortunate enough to know Chase can see him as a beacon of morality, filled with the Holy Spirit in a world that is rapidly spinning out of control, without regards to Jesus’ prophecy that “that everyone will hate you because of your allegiance to me…” – Matthew 10:22, NLT.
Wherever, and whatever Chase does in his future he will succeed for he is destined from the moment he was chosen by the Lord to partake of His kingdom, and those that come around him will benefit because in this world of twisted priorities Chase undoubtedly points people to Jesus by the godly example that he sets with his life. In the mostly secular world of sports this is so important for we are starving for the authentic example of Christianity that is Chase Robinson.
To quote C.S. Lewis: “God whispers to us in our pleasures” as part of “His megaphone to rouse a deaf world.” God speaks to all of us through the endless list of people that he brings into our lives. And He will never stop speaking to us, whether we want to hear Him to or not.
Heavenly Father I thank you for having brought Chase into my life, to be an example of what Christian humility really is, and I ask that you keep Your protective armor upon him and continue to bless him, in Jesus Name I pray, Amen
